Late Sunday evening, a surgical missile strike was conducted against Syrian and (suspected) Iranian military targets in Syria, killing between 16-40 while destroying more than 200 missiles.
Just after 10:30 PM local time, explosions were heard at military bases outside Aleppo and Hama, including the Brigade 47 base used by Iranian forces. The full extent of the casualties is not known since the reporting has been so divergent, with Iranian media (ISNA) initially admitting 18 servicemen were killed while another Iranian outlet (Tasnim) later called the claims baseless.
The strikes happened shortly after newly confirmed US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier in the day in Tel Aviv. Currently, however, no parties have claimed responsibility for the attack.
After the weekend events, Netanyahu scheduled a speech Monday night at 8:00 PM local time to discuss a “significant development regarding the nuclear agreement with Iran.”
Again, the announcement for the speech was made after the joint meeting between Netanyahu and Pompeo, and according to another report, after Netanyahu spoke directly with President Trump over the weekend concerning “the continuing threats and challenges facing the Middle East region, especially the problems posed by the Iranian regime’s destabilizing activities.”
According to the New York Post, Netanyahu will show proof of Iran violating the international agreement President Trump has repeatedly threaten to scrap.
“Israeli intelligence services have uncovered a huge amount of new and dramatic information on the Iranian nuclear program. Whoever still believes Iran signed the nuclear deal with honest intentions is going to have a very interesting time this evening,” – New York Post
Below, you can watch Prime Minister Netanyahu declare, “Iran lied, big time. After signing the nuclear deal in 2015, Iran intensified its efforts to hide its secret nuclear files” Then, he proceeds to show proof of Israel’s recovery of over ½ ton of their secret data, with roughly 55,000 pages of documents and another 55,000 files on 183 CDs, containing incriminating blueprints, photos, and live video.
As Netanyahu explains, Iran has been preparing for and developing nuclear weapon technology since 1999, originally via the covert Project Amad and then via a dual covert/overt campaign under the guise of scientific knowhow capabilities. He ended his speech by highlighting four conclusions from the trove of documents:
- Iran lied about never having a nuclear weapons program.
- Even after the (2015 nuclear) deal, Iran continued to preserve and expand its nuclear weapons knowhow for future use.
- Iran lied again in 2015 when it did come clean to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) as required by the nuclear deal (report findings here).
- The (2015) nuclear deal is based on (Iranian) lies.
In what appears to be a response to recent developments, Iran seems to be pulling out of the nuclear deal preemptively, according to the Daily Caller.
